SUFFRAGAN (Med. Lat. suffraganeus suffragator, one who assists, from sujJragari, to vote in favour of, to support) in the Christian Church, (I) a diocesan bishop in his relation to the metropolitan; (2) an assistant bishop. (See the article BISHOP.)
